What breeds of Chicken live on the Homestead?

We have two Araucanas at GreenHearth Homestead — Black Velvet and Arla. They lay the distinctive green eggs you’ll find in some of our egg boxes. Originally developed in Chile, Araucanas are an ancient South American breed traditionally associated with the Mapuche people and are famous for their blue or green-tinted eggs. A colourful addition to our flock!

Our three Bresse hens are a little unusual in the naming department. Floppy Comb is the only one to have earned a name so far! These French heritage hens are known for their striking white plumage, red combs and blue-grey legs, as well as producing the white eggs you’ll find in our boxes. Originating from the Bresse region of France, the breed is particularly prized for its excellent meat quality.

Some of the most special members of our flock are our ISA Brown hens, rescued through Fresh Start 4 Hens. We’ve worked with the charity twice, taking in six hens in total. Our first two were Kylo Hen and Goldie. Sadly, Kylo Hen was later lost to a fox attack, but we went on to give four more hens a fresh start — including Pinkie, quite possibly the friendliest and most gentle hen we’ve ever met.

ISA Browns were developed in France in the 1970s specifically for commercial egg production and are known for their excellent laying ability and friendly, adaptable nature. At GreenHearth, we’re proud to give these hardworking hens the chance to enjoy a very different kind of life.
